North and South, What did my research tell me?

1. Both the republicans and democrats were not going to abolish slavery. The democrats wished to perserve slavery and the republicans did not wish to abolish slavery only to curtail slaverys expansion.

2. Lincoln and Douglas contrasted greatly but both agreed on one issue. The Lecompten constitution was seen by both as an unjust act.

3. Bleeding Kansas created unrest in the North and South through the violence of popular sovereignty. The Southern residents of Kansas burnt Lawrence to the ground because it was a haven for anti-slavery Northerners. In retaliation, John Brown conducted the Pottawatomie massacre when he, his 4 sons and 2 men seized 5 proslavery men and split their skulls open with broadswords.

4. It was very important because the Southern controlled state government of Kansas tried to create a constitution before the now Northern majority forced them from office. This constitution was created in secret and not shown or ratified by the citizens of Kansas. Democrats were for the constition while republicans were against it. The biggest deviation here was Douglas who denounced the constitution and would therefore pay by losing key Southern support.

5. When Lincoln was innagurated it was the the final step to disunion. Southerners feared the worse the end of slavery out right, federal troops forcing their cooperation, slave revolts, and more John Brown raids. While the North viwed it as a triumph and the begining of a new age of republicanism.

6. The South behaved based on a principle of chivalry and honor because they believed they were descendents of European aristocrats and knights. Northerners were moral in nature because they were raised and taught by protestants and other christian denominations. The key difference was that Southerners were concerned with women, children, and how they are viewed by the public while Northerners were concerned with work, education, and how they are viewed by god.

7. they were similar in that they both had strong work ethics. The South worked to keep face among their fellow Southerners and to provide for their families. The North worked to please the lord because their belief was that the harder one worked in life the more favorably god would look upon them.
